The SelectTech 552 has been the default adjustable dumbbell for years: turn the dials, lift, and the plates you need come with the handle.
The plates make it longer than a fixed dumbbell, which can feel awkward for some moves, and it shouldn’t be dropped.
If you are starting with light toning, rehab or classes, a small neoprene set is the lowest-cost, simplest way to begin. Neoprene is gentle on floors and easy to grip.
To be clear: this is not adjustable, and most people outgrow light weights within months for lower-body and pressing exercises.
If you already lift or expect to progress, 52.5 pounds runs out quickly for rows, presses and lunges. NÜOBELL goes to 80 pounds in even 5-pound steps.
It costs more and the heaviest settings are bulky, but nothing else here lets you progress as far.
Pick a range you’ll grow into; lower-body moves need heavier weights first.
Smaller jumps make progress smoother.
Dial and twist systems take seconds; plate-loaded take longer.
Most selector dumbbells shouldn’t be dropped. Use a mat.
If space is limited, yes: one pair replaces a rack.
A weight you can lift for 8–12 controlled reps with good form; increase gradually. The CDC recommends muscle-strengthening activity at least 2 days a week.
Generally no; the selector mechanisms can break.
The 1090 goes to 90 lb but is longer and heavier. Most people do fine with 552.
Optional, but it saves bending and protects the mechanism.
